New community gardens planned for Princes Court will help to enhance the wellbeing of its residents, staff, volunteers and visitors.
Local horticulture students have conceived new designs for four shared garden areas, which will be brought to life by dedicated staff and volunteers.
Princes Court chief executive Jenny Garonne said the gardens surrounding the homes were integral to the residents’ lifestyle.
“Our outdoor spaces provide many physical and psychological benefits and are used every day for exercise, relaxation and spending time with loved ones,” Ms Garonne said.
“We loved having the local community involved in this project, and we’re excited to enjoy and nurture the gardens they designed especially for our residents.”
SuniTAFE teacher Michelle Lindhout said 15 students undertaking a Certificate III in Horticulture presented designs, and the four best ideas were chosen.
“Princes Court gave the students a real-life scenario for their assessment, and they had to research what plants would be suitable and design garden spaces that would be accessible to all of the residents and be easy to maintain,” Ms Lindhout said.
“The four winning students – Steven Jayet, Watson Taylor, Ashley McGuire and Sarah Ciechanowicz – created really unique designs, including a mini maze, a sensory garden and layered flower beds.”
Mr Jayet has since joined the Princes Court community permanently as the new gardener.
“I love being outside and mixing with the residents – you can see their appreciation, and they’re always offering advice or helping me in the garden,” he said.
“Gardening has always been an interest for me, so when the company I’d worked at for 30 years closed its Mildura branch, I decided to go to SuniTAFE and change careers.
“I was lucky to fall into this line of work with an organisation that’s been part of the community for so long. My grandmother was a resident here about 30 years ago and I remember coming to visit her as a kid.”
